Antique furniture has always been an interest for just about everyone. The saying they just don’t make them like that anymore would apply to antique curio cabinets. They just don’t use the same methods.
Modern furniture manufacturers rely on machines to create most of their designs and what is sometimes lost is a touch of character. Of course this is all done in the interest of saving money and everyone wants to save a buck or two.
Almost all antique curios were made by hand. The wood was hand picked and the pieces were sculpted using hand tools. The attention to detail in these antique pieces is a work of art that has long been lost with modern machines. The construction was also different and most of the times used stronger joints and that is why antiques are still around today.
There are also stains and wood colors that just are not available any more. As a wood ages it’s exposure to sunlight changes it’s color. Most hardwoods start off as a rich golden color and darken over time. That is why most antique curio cabinets have that rich deep dark red color that everyone can admire.
